SUNDERLAND Ladies striker Beth Mead is confident her side can fight off a late challenge from Doncaster Rovers Belles and lift the FA Women’s Super League 2 title.

The Lady Black Cats head to Millwall tomorrow (2pm) knowing a win would be enough to see Claire Robinson’s side crowned champions and promoted to WSL 1.

It has been a nail-biting final few weeks after Sunderland’s home defeat to Doncaster put Gordon Staniforth’s side right back in the mix, and they sit two points behind going in their final game against London Bees.

A draw would be no good for Sunderland with Doncaster possessing a superior goal difference, but given the fact they are unbeaten on the road this season, Mead is confident her side can finish the job.

“We’re quite a superstitious team so we don’t want to jinx the outcome,” the striker said.

“I was away with England when we played Millwall earlier in the season but I’ve watched them play and I know they are going to be a very hard team.

“They will chuck everything at us, they’re well-organised and I think away to Millwall is a tough place to go – so it won’t be an easy game at all.

“There are a lot of Sunderland fans down in London and hopefully a lot of fans come down and support us because we need all the support we can get at the moment.

“We always do well in away games and I’m confident we can get the result.”

DURHAM boss Lee Sanders has challenged his side to end their first season in the WSL on a high.

The Wildcats face Yeovil Town at New Ferens Park tomorrow (2pm) and a win could see the newcomers finish as high as sixth.

That would be some achievement considering Durham lost their first eight competitive fixtures and Sanders believes his young squad has a bright future ahead of them.

“Yeovil were a strong side last time we played them, so I expect the same again,” Sanders said.

“They’ve got a big threat in Sarah Wiltshire who scored a couple against us earlier in the season but we’re a different team than when we played them down there, so we’ll be hoping to pick up some points.

“It’s important that we finish the season on a high with a victory, or at least a good performance – we’re still building a fan base so it would be nice to send them home happy at the end of the season.

“Now we’ve found our feet we’ve become harder to beat and we’re winning games as well – we have had an excellent second half of the season.

“I think where we were three to four months ago, which was rock bottom, to where we could potentially finish is a huge difference.

“We have an excellent youth system so there should be some exciting players coming through over the next few years, so the future's bright.”
