RUSS WILCOX made a losing start to life as York City manager as his ten-man side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Shrewsbury Town.

Ryan Jarvis became the second York player to be dismissed in as many games as he was sent off shortly after the hour mark for a late challenge on Nathaniel Knight-Percival.

The game was still goalless at that stage, with Michael Ingham having produced smart first-half saves to twice deny Andy Mangan.

Mangan had an effort disallowed for offside, but while Ingham made an excellent save to deny Jermaine Grandison after the interval, Shrewsbury finally made a breakthrough with four minutes left.

Ingham would almost certainly have saved an 18-yard strike from Jordan Clark, but James Collins stuck out a boot to divert the ball into the net.

York: Ingham, McCoy, Lowe, McCombe, Ilesanmi, Jarvis, Montrose, Platt, Coulson, Brunt, De Girolamo (Meikle 62).
