MARTYN MOXON says Kane Williamson and Aaron Finch are Yorkshire’s top targets when it comes to overseas recruits for their 2015 title defence.

Williamson and Finch starred in this season’s LV= County Championship triumph, and the club would welcome them back with open arms again should they be made available by their respective boards.

New Zealand and Australia are both due to tour England at either end of next summer, but director of cricket Moxon says it is as yet unclear if and when they will be available.

As for other incomings, it is difficult to tell exactly what Yorkshire will need come the start of next season, and a lot of it depends on the squad England pick for their Test tour to the West Indies next April and into early May.

There is every chance that Adam Lyth and Adil Rashid will join Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Liam Plunkett on the trip.

As things stand, there has been a gap created by the departure of off-spinner Azeem Rafiq. But Moxon insists the White Rose hierarchy will give left-armer Karl Carver first crack at the whip to step up and fill that position.

If it turns out that Carver is not ready to make that step up, only then will the club consider recruiting a more experienced spinner.

“We want to try and keep Kane and Aaron with us as much as they’re available, but we don’t know yet what their availability is,” said Moxon.

“There is a possible time for Kane to be available at the start of the season before the New Zealand tour starts, but we don’t know exactly yet. We’ll have to wait and see. Finchy is hoping he’ll get in the Ashes squad as well as the ODIs, but again we don’t know.

“If they’re available, we’ll definitely have them back. If we can’t, we’ll have to look at other options.

“In terms of other gaps, we want to promote from within. We want to work with Karl Carver and the other batters, Jonny Tattersall, Will Rhodes and the likes. The young seamers, Fisher, Shaw, Wainman and Coad.

“We want to work with Karl. At this moment in time, we want him to fill the gap if Rash is not available because of an England call. As much as possible, we want to try and promote from within.

“If we get to the point closer to the start of the season and we’ve got a gap, we’ll have to view it. Karl has shown he’s not out of place in the game he played at Warwickshire, and that’s why we are not looking beyond that at the minute.

“We should know in February the West Indies touring party once the Lions tour is of South Africa is finished.

“Hopefully those lads I’ve mentioned can take any slots that become available. If they’re not ready, we’ll have to look at loans possibly or whatever’s out there. Our first thought is ‘let’s get these lads ready’.”

Yorkshire have already been linked with their former off-spinner James Middlebrook, released by Northamptonshire last month. That move, however, has been ruled out.
