Final score: Everton 4 Wolfsburg 1

EVERTON’S return to European football after five years away was marked with a fine 4-1 win over Wolfsburg.

Steven Naismith’s deflected shot, Seamus Coleman’s goal, Leighton Baines’ penalty and Kevin Mirallas’ strike gave the Toffees a night to remember at Goodison.

Ricardo Rodriquez’s late free-kick got Wolfsburg a consolation but it was Everton’s night in Europa League Group H.

“We’re made up to score four against a team like that, we’re very happy,” Baines said.

On his partnership with Coleman - after both fullbacks scored - he added: “We’ve got license to get forward and there are moments when we both go, and moments when one has to stay.

“We are getting the balance right and working on it all the time.”

Everton lead the embryonic table after the other game between Lille and Krasnodar ended in a draw.

“We’re excited to be in the competition, the fans are excited and we’re looking forward to nights like these,” Baines said.

“We are looking forward to travelling to games and we want to win the group and get some more exciting fixtures”

Naismith has scored three Premier League goals already but is likely to see tonight’s effort taken off him.

“That’s not the big issue, so long as we get the win, that’s the main thing,” the Scotland international said.

“There is more to come.

The manager has signed some very good players who have not had as much time as they like.”

Manager Roberto Martinez added: “I thought we did a lot of talking about European nights at Goodison and it was phenomenal to see the fans and it was pleasing to finish with that scoreline.

“We tried to play through them and use the gaps. We used our pressure better than them and got some opportunities by being well organised.

“It was a really open game, teams who wanted to get on the ball and the fans enjoy watching us play.”
