DURHAM have signed India’s fastest bowler, Varun Aaron, who broke Stuart Broad’s nose with a bouncer in the Old Trafford Test, for the final two weeks of the season.
The 24-year-old paceman, who can bowl at more than 90 miles an hour, came into the recent Investec Test series for the final two games and took five wickets.
In addition to three Test caps, he has made eight one-day international appearances but was not retained for the ODI series against England and is currently in the middle of a ten-day fast bowling training programme under the guidance of Glenn McGrath.
He will fly to England next week to link up with Durham for the home championship match against Northamptonshire, starting on September 15. He will also play in the final game at Edgbaston the following week as Durham try to ensure they avoid relegation.
Aaron will replace John Hastings, who will play in tomorrow’s Royal London Cup semi-final at home to Nottinghamshire before heading to London for his final game at Lord’s, starting on Tuesday.
That match is scheduled to end next Friday and the burly Australian is booked on a flight that night to join up with Chennai Superkings for their Champions League campaign in India.
