WEST AUCKLAND have appointed Anth Smith as their new manager.

Smith’s last job in charge at Gateshead ended soon after the beginning of last season.

He will take charge of West for the first time this Saturday against Darlington in the preliminary round of the FA Cup. He is a former Sunderland team mate of Quakers boss Martin Gray.

West general manager Stuart Alderson said: “I think we’ve made a great choice.

We’ve been inundated with applications, and couldn’t interview everyone, but Anth stood out.”

Smith takes over from Peter Dixon, who quit last week after five years in charge.

Midfielder Steve Skinner, who was put in temporary charge, has left the Darlington Road club, but says he would like to remain involved in playing or managing.

West are hoping for a crowd of around 1,000 for the match against Quakers. Admission is £6 and £3 with fans able to pay at the gate.

Meanwhile, Darlington are again running the sponsora- goal scheme to raise funds for the club. Over the past two seasons it has raised £3,000.

Participants agree to pledge a sum for each goal scored by their chosen player, for each goal scored by the team, for each clean sheet, penalties scored, points achieved or goal difference. All Evo-Stik and FA matches count.

At the end of the season all participants are encouraged to pay the sums owed and the money raised will be handed to the club. Payments can be made monthly.

Updates will be sent during the season, and running totals will be posted on various websites and forums, as well as Facebook and Twitter.
