MIDDLESBROUGH Municipal Golf Course is set to tee-off with its second Pro-Am tournament.

The event, organised by the Professional Golfers Association, will tee off at the Municipal Golf Course this Saturday aiming to emulate its successful debut in 2013.

The tournament comprises of up to 40 teams, featuring three amateurs and one professional golfer in each.

This caps a successful year for Middlesbrough, having hosted the Pro Series for the first time on April 28.

Headlining this year’s event is senior pro John Harrison, who has previously coached and competed against some of England’s most gifted players.

The Maften Hall professional, 54, will be striving to add success at this year’s tournament to an impressive career spanning over three decades.

Steve Pentland, of the Municipal Golf Club, believes that the tournament can rival the success of 2013.

He states: “Last year’s tournament was a high profile event for the local clubs. We had good feedback from professionals.

“Everybody’s looking forward to it.”

The 18 hole course has a reputation as an first-rate venue, covering over 6000 yards.

Pentland, however, claims that local clubs are struggling to attract junior golfers but hopes prominent events like the Pro-Am tournament can help to rectify the problem:

“With events like the one at Rockliffe Hall (the English Senior Open), it raises the profile of the sport.”

The final of the tournament was witnessed by over 4,500 spectators, as Argentine Cesar Montaserio emerged victorious with an exceptional nine par under 63.

The 2013 Pro-Am series was won by the Teeside Golf Club’s Vincent Guest, who recorded an outstanding score of 65.
