AS expected, Durham found it tough going on the final morning at Old Trafford, losing five wickets to reach 129 for six.

They lead by 48 but need to bat at least until tea and much depends on Paul Collingwood, who is unbeaten on 14.

The left handers were always going to struggle against left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan and he has removed three of them while also gaining an lbw verdict against Michael Richardson.

The right-hander did not look happy, but Scott Borthwick had even more reason for grievance when adjudged lbw to Glen Chapple.

The veteran Lancashire skipper was bowling round the wicket and Borthwick had his pad outside the line of off stump when he was struck.

Confirmation that it wasn’t just the turn out of the footmarks that Durham had to worry about came in the day’s second over when a Kerrigan shooter barely left the deck and defeated wicketkeeper Alex Davies in going for four byes.

Lancashire showed little faith in their second left-arm spinner, Stephen Parry, but Tom Smith was a threat and thought he had Borthwick caught behind for 12. Davies claimed the catch but looked to have scooped it off the ground.

The score had moved on from the overnight 59 for one to 73 when Keaton Jennings played back when he should have been forward and was lbw to Kerrigan for 20.

Borthwick went for the same score and three overs later Richardson, pushing forward, departed for 15.

It became 103 for five when Ben Stokes, who made two, turned Kerrigan off the face of the bat to Steven Croft at forward short leg. Turning slightly to his right the fielder clung on just above knee height.

Lancashire finally turned to Parry and after Phil Mustard reverse swept him for three Collingwood drove him for a straight six.

But in his fourth over Mustard moved too far across and was bowled leg stump for 12, bringing in Calum MacLeod for the final five minutes before lunch.

After spending yesterday in bed because of a virus Ryan Buckley was in the nets before play and will bat.
