DURHAM manager Andy Thorpe bemoaned his side’s wastefulness in front of goal as defeat to Yeovil Town saw their wait for a second FA Women’s Super League 2 victory go on.

Zoe Ness put Durham ahead but two goals from Sarah Wiltshire either side of a Ellie Curson strike gave Yeovil victory.

And Thorpe believes Curson’s goal ten minutes into the second half proved to be the turning point.

“I think we came out in the second half as a totally different team and we just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal,” he said.

“I felt that if we scored after that chance – in the 23rd minute – we would probably have gone on and won the game.

“It was one of those games where whoever scored first in the second half would go on and win the game, just unfortunately it wasn’t us.

“We pushed on, we didn’t sit back and play defensively; we pushed for the equaliser, but unluckily for us we hit the crossbar and that’s the way it goes in football sometimes.”

Yeovil made a lively start as Wiltshire hit the woodwork inside two minutes.

The Wildcats were twice denied by Yeovil goalkeeper Rachel Simkin but their persistence paid off on 26 minutes when Ness slotted home after being sent through by Beth Hepple.

Yeovil equalised after 33 minutes when Wiltshire stabbed home from Natalie Haigh’s knock back following a goalmouth scramble.

The Glovers edged ahead on 55 minutes when Curson fired home with a stunning strike following a superb flowing move involving Helen Bleazard and Katie Cook.

Durham came close to levelling on 78 minutes when Emily Scott clattered an angled effort against the crossbar.

But Wiltshire added her second on 89 minutes to secure manager Jamie Sherwood victory in his first game after taking over from Sarah Lawler.
