OLYMPIC silver medallist Nicola Wilson has been selected to represent Great Britain at this month’s World Equestrian Games in France.

Wilson, who is from Morton-on-Swale, near Northallerton, will partner Annie Clover in the British three-day eventing squad at the prestigious World Games, which take place between August 28-31.

The call up follows a difficult few weeks for the British squad, with Izzy Taylor and Pippa Funnell both forced to withdraw because of injuries to their horses.

The event will mark ten-year-old Annie Clover’s first outing at world level, with Wilson having retired Opposition Buzz, the horse that carried her to team silver at London 2012, from top-class competition.

“I am delighted that Annie Clover has been selected to go to the World Equestrian Games,” said Wilson. “She is a horse that my mum bought as a four-year-old and I have always thought so much of her.

“She is still only a young horse, but we have a strong partnership built up over the last six years and she has been so consistent in all of her three-day-events to date.

“She has always appeared to be a cool customer under pressure and take each level in her stride, so I am sure she will give her all at the World Equestrian Games, as I will.

“I am especially thrilled for my mum and dad - owners of Annie, who have been so influential and supportive throughout my career.”

Wilson joins Zara Phillips (High Kingdom), William Fox-Pitt (Chilli Morning), Oliver Townend (Black Tie), Tina Cook (De Novo News) and Harry Meade (Wild Lone) in the British team that will compete in Normandy.

“I have built up a really strong relationship with Annie Clover and am very proud that we have produced another horse to this level,” said Wilson. “I would like to thank my whole support team, loyal owners of all my horses, sponsors, UK Sport, British Eventing and the British Equestrian Federation for helping me fulfil my dream.

“Fingers tightly crossed that the next few weeks go smoothly and we can go out and do everyone proud.”
