RIPON diver Jack Laugher surprisingly missed out on a second Commonwealth Games gold medal as he could only finish second in the final of the 3m springboard competition.

Having claimed a gold medal in the 1m springboard event on Wednesday night, Laugher was expected to complete a double triumph when he competed in the final of his preferred 3m event tonight.

However, a crucial error on his fifth dive - a forward four-and-a-half somersault - meant he could only finish second behind Malaysian Ooi Tze Liang.

His total of 449.70pts was more than 15 points lower than his score in the morning preliminary round, and was also well below the scores he has regularly been posting on the World Cup series this season.

Laugher, who trains at the City of Leeds club, could still claim a second gold when he teams up with Chris Mears in the synchronised 3m springboard competition tomorrow morning.

The 19-year-old was joined on the podium by Harrogate's Oliver Dingley, who claimed a deserved bronze medal after a solid series of dives.
