RIPON'S Jack Laugher started what could prove to be a Commonwealth Games gold rush as he claimed the 1m springboard title this evening.

Laugher delivered a masterclass on the low board as he won by 45 points over the six-dive series, a huge margin in elite-level diving.

With his two best events - the 3m springboard and 3m synchro - still to come over the next two days, there is every chance the 19-year-old could leave Edinburgh's Royal Commonwealth Pool with three gold medals.

Today's victory came in the only non-Olympic discipline he will compete, and at least partially eradicates the memories of a disappointing 2012 Olympics, when he failed to come through the preliminary rounds in London.

Having qualified in first position this morning, Laugher, who trains in Leeds, took the lead at the halfway stage of the final when he produced a superb third dive that secured marks of eight or more across the board.

With team-mate Chris Mears and a couple of Australian rivals, Matthew Mitcham and Grant Nel, making a succession of minor errors with their final three dives, Laugher held his nerve superbly to ultimately claim gold by a runaway margin.

His final dive - a backward two-and-a-half somersaults - was arguably the best of the lot, and ensured he would add the Commonwealth title to his four World Junior crowns.

After receiving his medal he Tweeted: "AAAAAHHH GOLD MEDAL! So so so so happy! Time to rest up for tomorrow's 3m event! #TeamEngland #commonwelfie"
