SOPHIE TAYLOR’S remarkable Commonwealth Games ended with a silver lining – and it shows how far she’s come in Glasgow that it was deemed disappointing.

Taylor claimed a stunning 100m breaststroke title on Monday and was back on the final evening yesterday as part of England’s 4x100m medley relay.

Led off by Lauren Quigley, then Taylor before Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Fran Halsall brought the team home, they clocked a British record 3:57.03 minutes for silver.

Australia’s quartet were not to be denied though and won in a Games record 3:56.23 with Taylor adamant she had done all she could to rival for gold.

“My mum has always said to me in a relay that I’m a fighter and that’s what I’ll do,” said Taylor.

“Obviously we weren’t in first place, which the whole team wanted us to be, so I got in and gave it my all.

“Turning first I thought that was my part of the job done and the girls just carried it on which was great.”

The team’s undoubted leader is Halsall but Taylor, O’Connor and Quigley are showing there is certainly a future in the pool for England and Britain.

That comes after an Olympics in London in 20120 where Britain’s swimmers failed – O’Connor has won three individual medals including 200m medley gold.

And Halsall, who’s now won 11 Commonwealth Games medals, including the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly titles in Glasgow, couldn’t get enough of Taylor.

“That was a tough race but I knew these girls were going to put me in a fantastic position and they did.

“They did everything they possibly could. I gave it my all as the girls did and to take the British record is fantastic.”
