Newcastle

AND finally we have a positive outcome in the Remy Cabella saga. Every transfer window has its on-off deals and Cabella has been THAT very one.

And it was officially confirmed by St James’ Park last night that Cabella has become a Magpies player - and he was pictured on Tyneside to prove it.

For more than a year Newcastle have tried to sign him and, eventually, they have. An agreement for more than £10m has been reached between the clubs and a six-year deal agreed, so it’s job done.

Cabella’s arrival is the second transfer exchange between Montpellier and Newcastle in the last 18 months – and it will be hoped he does better than Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Yanga-Mbiwa has struggled to adapt to the English game and Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for the man they signed for £6.7m in January last year. Montpellier, who he captained to the league title, have not made an offer at this stage, but he could be going back to France.

St Etienne have been in touch with Newcastle to see if they can end his St James’ Park frustrations. They are unable to match the fee that was paid for him, which is ideally what Newcastle are keen to bring back to the club. A loan deal has been suggested, so it’s watch this space.

Sunderland

It has been no secret that Sunderland are looking for a new left-back and the one they would prefer is Marcos Alonso - again.

Alonso impressed enough during his five month loan at the Stadium of Light to persuade Gustavo Poyet that he wants to keep him permanently. The price, however, has provided more of a problem.

Fiorentina have been keen to sell him to the highest bidder, with West Ham’s interest complicating things for Sunderland. However, a fresh move has been made by the Black Cats and it’s definitely a deal that should happen.

Alonso liked it at Sunderland and is comfortable with returning, so Sunderland are trying to make the most of that and could have to pay around £3m to land him. It would be difficult to find someone better for that sort fee.

While discussions with other clubs are taking place at home and abroad between clubs, the only other fresh news on the transfer front from the weekend is that Crewe are asking for £1m for Max Clayton.

The teenager has been training at the Academy of Light and Poyet is believed to be keen on signing him after his contract expired. Crewe, though, would be due compensation because of his age, so the two clubs could have to reach an agreement between themselves and it has been suggested £1m is what has been asked.

Middlesbrough

It has become clear in the last few days that Spanish striker Kike is coming to Boro, but who will be the other new striker to arrive? Who will be the right-back Aitor Karanka craves? And will Adam Clayton increase his midfield options.

Middlesbrough are keen to make Clayton one of their big summer signings to bolster options in the hope of becoming a force in the Championship promotion race next season.

Huddersfield have so far knocked Middlesbrough back, despite being interested in Kei Kamara, but if Middlesbrough can up their offer to around the £1.5m mark then they could get their man.

And with Lukas Jutkiewicz heading for Burnley for that fee, the chances of Clayton moving to the Riverside Stadium could well increase.
