THE loss of three wickets in five overs just before lunch left Durham perilously placed on 119 for five after Keaton Jennings had battled to a half-century.

Tim Bresnan complained about the ball to no avail at the start of both his spells this morning and straight after the second complaint produced a snorter to beat Jennings.

In the next over the left-hander departed for 56 when he pushed forward and edged Steve Patterson to second slip, where Adam Lyth held a good catch low to his right.

In the next over Gordon Muchall drove Bresnan imperiously to the cover boundary then played back to the next ball when he should have been forward.

It skidded on to him and he was adjudged lbw, missing the boat after coming in to face an ageing ball on a sunny morning.

Ryan Sidebottom began the day with a fine spell of one for seven in six overs, having Scott Borthwick caught behind for ten with the perfect delivery to a left-hander.

While Michael Richardson took 15 balls to get off the mark, Jennings kept the score moving by driving Jack Brooks to the off-side boundary twice in an over.

When leg-spinner Adil Rashid came on for the 32nd over Jennings paddled him to fine leg for four but he looked fortunate to survive a Sidebottom lbw appeal on 43.

He greeted Bresnan’s introduction with a straight drive for four and all looked well when Richardson cover drove two fours in Rashid’s third over.

Jennings looked very solid in reaching 50 off 122 balls, but his exit left Durham vulnerable and after Muchall’s departure Richardson followed to the last ball before lunch.

Rashid was brought back for an over and Paul Collingwood almost chopped on before Richardson, on 23, took a step forward to the final ball and chipped a return catch.

Durham still need 152 to avoid the follow-on.
