NEWCASTLE are poised to allow Paul Dummett to leave on loan in the first half of next season after identifying Massadio Haidara as their preferred back-up to first-choice left-back Davide Santon.

Dummett’s name has been circulated among a number of Championship clubs in the hope that a spell in the second tier could aid his development.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew does not want to lose the 22-year-old, who recently signed a contract extension committing him to St James’ Park until 2017.

However, Haidara is regarded as a more reliable deputy to Santon and Pardew would prefer Dummett to be playing regular football in the Championship than languishing in Newcastle’s development squad as the club’s third-choice left-back.

The Wales international made ten Premier League starts in the second half of last season, but failed to make a compelling case for his inclusion in Newcastle’s first choice XI.

Newcastle’s willingness to let him leave on loan underlines their determination to sign a direct right-back replacement for Mathieu Debuchy, who should be confirmed as an Arsenal player before the weekend.

There had been suggestions that Newcastle could switch Davide Santon to the right flank and ask Haidara and Dummett to share left-back duties, but the club’s recruitment team have decided there is a compelling need to sign a natural right-back once Debuchy’s switch to the Emirates is complete.

The France international was in London yesterday completing a medical at a private health facility and, with personal terms already agreed, his £12m switch to Arsenal should be confirmed shortly, with Barcelona striker Alexis Sanchez also expected to join him in a new-look Gunners squad.

Daryl Janmaat and Serge Aurier remain Newcastle’s preferred right-back options, although their interest in the latter could be scuppered by competition from Paris St Germain.

The Ligue 1 champions, who were previously credited with an interest in Debuchy, have been heavily linked with Aurier in the French press, and are ready to use Christophe Jallet as a makeweight in a deal with Toulouse.

To further complicate matters, Monaco have also made contact with Toulouse officials to inquire about Aurier’s availability.

Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven are close to completing a deal for Luuk de Jong, who spent the second half of last season on loan at St James’ Park.

Borussia Monchengladbach have rejected PSV’s initial £4.5m offer for the forward, but it is anticipated the two clubs will come to an agreement over a compromise fee.
