KEI KAMARA’S Middlesbrough future could be in doubt after the striker accused the club of not supporting him during a recent bout of malaria.

The Sierra Leone international took to his Twitter page over the weekend to reveal he had been suffering from the potentially life threatening disease for a week, claiming neither Boro nor his national association had offered him any support.

He wrote on the social networking site: “So as u may or may not know by now I play for Middlesbrough FC & represent my nation Sierra Leone. I have had Malaria for a week now. Not fun.

“Now I am feeling better it’s time to say: ‘Thank you MFC & SLFA for doing NOTHING.’”

He added: “Am Bless this happen in Kansas were folks care for me.”

It is highly likely that Boro will seek to speak with Kamara over the coming days, but the Northern Echo understands the club will not be releasing a statement and will instead keep the matter in house.

It is unclear whether Middlesbrough knew the striker was suffering from the illness, but his public outburst could lead to a move away from Teesside this summer.

The 29-year-old arrived at the Riverside last September from Sporting Club Kansas when Tony Mowbray was still in charge, but despite an encouraging start which included four goals in seven starts, the striker fell out of favour under new boss Aitor Karanka.

Injury ruled him out for large spells and having made just three starts in 2014 it is unclear whether the striker is part of the Boro boss’ plans for next season.

The 29-year-old was a fans’ favourite during his spell at MLS outfit Kansas and a move back to the United States could be on the cards if Karanka decides to look at other options.

The Boro boss is in the market for a couple of strikers with questions marks over the futures of Marvin Emnes, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Kamara, but so far the only player to arrive this summer is goalkeeper Tomas Mejias from Real Madrid.

Middlesbrough were keen on both Adam Le Fondre and Lewis Grabban, but the pair have signed for Cardiff and Norwich respectively.

Sunderland’s Danny Graham remains an option after his successful loan spell in the second half of last season, while former Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi is also on the radar.

Karanka had hoped to press on with his summer recruitment drive, but the Boro boss has had to be patient while work goes on behind the scenes.
