Gillespie admits Yorkshire must raise their game

The Northern Echo: Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie

JASON GILLESPIE insists Yorkshire must improve on this week’s performance against Lancashire if they are to be serious LV= County Championship title contenders come September.

Not a ball was bowled during yesterday’s fourth day of a Roses clash at Headingley which Lancashire had the better of.

Coach Gillespie then admitted Ryan Sidebottom is set to miss Saturday’s Championship trip to Northamptonshire at Wantage Road with the left hamstring injury sustained on Monday, although he is confident the left-armer will be fit for Nottinghamshire on June 8.

Although Yorkshire could have easily turned the game around had there been any play yesterday, Lancashire led by 130 with seven second-innings wickets in hand.

The Red Rose county had gained a first-innings lead of 82 during Tuesday’s third day having bowled out for 243 in reply to 325.

Yorkshire, who claimed nine points from this match, have now drawn three, won two and lost one of their six fixtures.

“Absolutely no question (we need to improve),” said Gillespie. “We want to focus on a process, and we just didn’t quite get it right.

“We did some pretty good things in this game, no question, but we have to be honest with ourselves – we just weren’t quite as disciplined as we have been. It’s something to learn from and make sure we’re better next time.”

Sidebottom, who will be replaced by Steve Patterson at Northampton, was having a scan yesterday afternoon.

“We’re hoping there’s not much there, and it’s certainly not a long-term injury by any stretch,” added Gillespie. “We’re hopeful he’ll be back sooner rather than later. We’re hoping he’ll be back very soon.

“Northampton will possibly be too soon. We’re pretty confident he’ll be ready for the next game.”

Yorkshire are in NatWest T20 Blast action against Derbyshire at Headingley tomorrow (5.30pm). Australian Aaron Finch will debut.
