Final Score: London Bees 0 Durham Women 1

DURHAM general manager Lee Sanders insists that his side can now go into every game with confidence after Jess Round’s superb strike against London Bees earned the visitors their first-ever FA Women’s Super League Two win.

The key moment came in the 64th minute when Round smashed a vicious left-footed shot from the edge of the area past Bees’ goalkeeper Cherie Rowlands to condemn the hosts to their third straight loss.

The win lifts Durham off the foot of the table and Sanders believes that his side can use it as a springboard for the rest of the season.

“The difference was probably our work rate,” he said.

“Credit to London Bees, the match probably could have gone either way but it was our work ethic that perhaps swung it in our favour.

“The goal was a brilliant strike from Jess Round. She’s left-footed anyway but for her to do that – hit it on the half turn into the far corner was something special, a real beauty.

“This win is just going to give us such a boost now going into the break. To beat opposition like that in the way we did will give our girls confidence to go on now for the rest of the season.”

Zoe Ness came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors but was twice denied by Rowlands while Beth Hepple also threatened.

At the other end a lobbed effort from Chontele Lawrence and a volley from Dawn Mallett tested Katie Luther while the home side also had a penalty appeal waved away.

Bees midfielder Megan Goss was stretchered off and sent to hospital after clashing heads with Vic Linsley early on, with head coach Tom Donati admitting she took a nasty blow.

“Megan has had an x-ray. It was a nasty one but we don’t have much of an update at the minute, hopefully she’ll be OK,” he explained.

“It was a poor game from our point of view. Durham had more quality on the ball, I didn’t think we used the ball well at all and it doesn’t matter who you play, when you don't use the ball well you will constantly be under pressure and that was the case.

“We can't really take any positives from that, Sophie Fogarty did okay for us, but on the whole we just weren’t good enough.

“We've got some work to do now, as a group we need to put the work in.”
