Third man strikes

It wasn’t quite the carnage of Hove, but after the stand of 335 between Sussex’s Luke Wright and Ben Brown Durham were on the receiving end of another big partnership.

Samit Patel and James Taylor put on 192 before both were caught by Breese in successive Ben Stokes overs, leaving Nottinghamshire on 238 for five at tea.

It was just as well for Durham that Patel throttled back after thrashing a 41-ball half-century.

It took him a further 99 balls to reach 99, at which point he was surprised by steep bounce from Stokes and the ball flew off the shoulder of his bat for Breese to run in and dive forward to hold an excellent catch.

Two overs later Taylor departed for 88 when he drove at a wide one and sliced for Breese, 15 yards in from the boundary, to move to his right and cling on again.

Paul Collingwood dare not risk debut boy Gavin Main again after his opening four overs cost 29 with Patel hitting him for six fours.

It meant extra work for Breese, who looked unlucky not have Patel lbw for 53 in his first over but needed his one-day skills to try to contain the batsmen.

Taylor swept him for his tenth four to reach 50 off 79 balls then lofted him twice over long-on for six.

On 69 Taylor survived an appeal for caught behind off Chris Rushworth then shook his hand as though he had been hit on the glove. The only explanation was that he had been struck painfully on the hand early in his innings.

There was another good spell from Usman Arshad, who beat Patel with a beauty on 76. The batsman crawled from 50 to 79 before driving two successive balls to the cover boundary prior to hitting Breese over mid-wicket for six.

On his departure Riki Wessels enjoyed two slices of fortune, top-edging an attempted hook off Stokes into space then almost being run out by a fine piece of fielding from Michael Richardson.

Wessels was on nine at tea with Chris Read on one.
