Final Score: Reading Women 4 Durham Women 0

Durham boss Lee Sanders thinks some of his side need to take a look at themselves after they were thumped 4-0 by Reading in the FA Women’s Super League 2.

Sanders was quick to praise the talents of Reading striker Francesca Kirby who helped herself to a hat-trick but bemoaned his side’s inability to get the basics right.

Reading started brightly and Kirby found herself behind the Durham defence after two minutes but dragged her shot wide.

Kirby saw two more efforts fly over the bar before Lois Roche broke the deadlock on 27 minutes after Durham failed to clear their box and Kirby doubled their lead on 43 minutes with a well taken finish.

Ten minutes after the restart and Kirby bagged her second after she broke away from the Durham defence with pace and slotted home.

Durham thought they had pulled one back after 74 minutes when Stacey Crooks had the ball in the back of the net only to be flagged offside.

Crooks beat the offside trap moments later but Davies denied her and five minutes later Kirby put the game to bed as she wrapped up her hat-trick.

“Fran Kirby was exceptional, they are a very strong side and well organised but she was just another class today,” said Sanders.

“We are really disappointed because we would do well for 25 or 30 minutes but then we would get sloppy and give the ball away.

“You can’t give the ball away to players like Kirby because she is outstanding and can punish you.

“I think they should be disappointed and some of the basics aren’t there at the moment. We didn’t clear the ball and we were punished and that is a basic error.

“I don’t think the scoreline reflects the match but some of the players need to look at themselves and realise that they need to do a bit better.”

Reading had the chance to make it five in the dying moments of the match after they were awarded a penalty but Lauren Bruton saw her effort saved by Luther.

While Reading ran-out comfortable winners Sanders believes the scoreline failed to reflect his side’s chances and believes his squad will grow into the league as their season progresses.

“We made too many mistakes which is frustrating because we had chances and we feel that if we can start putting those away we can beat anyone.

“But no one will remember the chances and it is only the final scoreline that people will look at.

“I’ve said it several times and I don’t want to use it as an excuse but we have a very young an inexperience side that can be naive at times.

“They will grow into the league but we just need to look towards our next match now and focus on getting a vital win.

“We are still probably in our honeymoon period in the league and we are still adjusting to the level that it is being played at.”
