Manchester City have won the Premier League title for the second time in three years.

A point at home to West Ham United would have been sufficient to claim the crown and keep Liverpool at bay, who started the day two points behind with significantly inferior goal difference.

In the event City made light work of the Hammers with goals by Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany either side of half-time at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool recorded a win – their 12th in their last 14 games of the season – over Newcastle United who ended the game with nine men.

They had to come from behind to clinch the points, however, as a resilient Magpies led 1-0 at the break following an own goal by Martin Skrtel.

Anfield was deflated of much of first hour, Newcastle’s 4-5-1 formation working a treat to restrict the Reds’ chances, but there was a huge when Daniel Agger equalised.

He made it 1-1 on 63 minutes after a Steven Gerrard, and Liverpool’s talismanic captain also supplied the set-piece delivery that saw Dean Sturridge put the hosts 2-1 up soon after.

Almost immediately Newcastle went down to ten men when Shola Ameobi was red-carded having received two bookings.

There was no way back for Newcastle at this point and they finished with nine men when Paul Dummett was sent off by Phil Dowd for a foul on Luis Suarez.
