DARLINGTON'S one-armed golfing sensation Darren Grey is heading on safari next month after landing an England call-up.

Grey has been selected as part of a three-man team alongside captain Andy Gardiner and Paul Tookey which will be competing in a world championship event in South Africa.

The trio will go to the Zebula Safari Golf Complex in north-east South Africa from May 16-23, which includes three days of scratch strocke play golf with the best two days scores counting to a cumulative total.

The tournament is being ran by the South Africa Disabled Golf Association in the hope of raising the profile by showcasing some of the world's best disabled golfers.

It's an exciting opportunity for Grey, who has enjoyed a good six weeks since fearing his career at the top of disabled golf could come to a close because of funding.

“I've just started a new job as a golf assistant at Hunley Hall too which is great,” said Grey. “I played one of the courses there last week and only did three holes because I had a hole-in-one.

“It's the third hole-in-one I have had, but this was at work on a course I've never played before. I got it on the third hole then walked in because it is difficult to concentrate when that happens.

In to the wind, his tee shot towards the hole bounce before making its way in on the par three, 143-yard teaser on a course which sits along the Cleveland Way.

His intentions after heading to South Africa will be to play in the One-Armed World Championship.

Grey said: “I have to say thanks to my family, Les Dixon, Blueflame, Darlington Golf Club, Hunley Hall Hotel and Golf Club and SG Petch for all the help and support. They have helped me raise £320 to go to the One-Armed World Championships in Sussex.”
