Final Score: Southampton 4 Newcastle United 0

NEWCASTLE UNITED suffered their second heavy defeat of the week going down 4-0 to Southampton’s English contingent in front of the watching Alan Pardew and Mike Ashley.

Pardew took the game in from the stands after serving his three-match stadium ban, while Ashley made it four games in a row at St Mary’s.

The pair couldn’t have witness a more disappointing and embarrassing defeat with goals Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and a brace from Jay Rodriquez condemning the Magpies to a second straight defeat.

Pardew made three changes to his line-up with Rob Elliot, Massadio Haidara and Hatem Ben Arfa all coming in.

Elliot replaced the injured Tim Krul for his first Premier League start of the season and the Magpies keeper had probably one of the busiest halves of his career with his side all at sea in the opening 45 minutes at St Mary’s.

As early as the eighth minute the Saints should have been ahead, England hopeful Jay Rodriquez, finding the side netting despite finding himself through one on one with Elliot.

Three minutes later the striker again found space in the box and leapt above any Magpies challenge to get a header in on goal, but again he found the wrong side of the post.

Rodriquez could have had a hat-trick by the quarter-hour mark had it not been for some great goalkeeping when Elliot managed to get a hand to his shot after being put through by a pin-point pass by Steven Davis.

Pardew was back in the fold following his suspension and sat behind owner Mike Ashley at St Mary’s – a penny for the thoughts of both as their side were continually brushed aside in the middle of the park.

Lallana and Lambert also went close to giving Pochettino’s men a deserved lead while Cheik Tiote and Mike Williamson had to be pulled apart by Yoan Gouffran.

The Saints should have been home and dry as early as 13 minutes, but despite a string of missed chances the inevitable happened on the stroke of half time.

Lambert was sent free in the box and set up Rodriquez to finally break Elliot’s resolve with the Magpies defence nowhere to be seen in their own area.

Not surprisingly, Pardew, who could access the dressing room during the interval despite his touchline ban, made two changes with Davide Santon and Luuk de Jong coming on for Hatem Ben Arfa and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

The former had rarely touched the ball in 45 minutes of play, while the latter was given a torrid time with the Saints exposing the French defender as a weakness at right-back.

However, Santon could do no better than his team-mate when he lost Lambert at the back post to put Southampton two-up.

Lallana sent a neat cross towards the back post and his fellow countryman had enough time and space to control the ball before rifling into the roof of the net past Elliot.

The provider turned goalscorer in the 71st minute when, after collecting the ball midway in Newcastle’s, the midfielder cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

It could have been four when Rodriquez’s header smashed against the post and Elliot made a great save to deny James Ward-Prowse from the rebound.

Southampton added a fourth one minute from time with Rodriquez grabbing his second of the game.
