WES BROWN hopes the atmosphere generated by Sunderland’s supporters at Wembley can carry into their league campaign.

Around 40,000 Sunderland fans were at Wembley on Sunday to see their team lose 3-1 to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup final, and Brown admitted that the sea of red and white provided great inspiration for Gus Poyet’s side - and that it will help them going into the final games of the Premier League season.

“The fans were ledge,” said Brown. “As soon as we went out, you could hear it, even when you don’t understand what they’re singing, believe me, it gives you a big lift and it keeps you going.

“You want to do well just for them, not even yourself, and again it’s very disappointing since we went 1-0 up.”

As a Manchester United player, Brown was used to 76,000 at Old Trafford cheering the team on, and while attendances average out at 40,000 at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, the noise level at Wembley was cranked up to an incredible level on Sunday, something that the 34-year-old centre-half thrived upon.

“I like it,” he said. “I wish it was like that every week. It gets me up for the game, I’m sure if our fans can do that for the rest of the season, especially at home, then it will be great.

“We know what a big deal it was. All week it was leading up to it, anyone you see was talking about it, saying ‘come on lads, do your best’, and I’m sure they can see that we tried our best, we just needed a little more and maybe get a second goal but it wasn’t to be.”

For Brown, it was his first game back at Wembley since March 2010 when he represented England in a 3-1 win over Egypt, and the defender has also played in the Champions League final as well as the League Cup and FA Cup finals at the 90,000 capacity arena.

And Brown admitted that it brought a few memories back. He said: “It was good to get back. When I walked out I got that feeling back and it brought back some old memories. I like playing here, if anything it makes me play better, it makes me concentrate better.

“But on Sunday we were very disappointed. We went 1-0 up, maybe could have went two-up, and from then we always knew it was going to be hard.

“Second half they scored two fantastic goals, the third goal came when we were trying to get one back, and they scored on the break. We can take a lot out of the game. But we’ve been saying that for a while. We have to start getting some points on the league.

“I know we played well, but we’re still very disappointed. We’ve got to take this into the league now, especially the first half with how we played, and try to get a few points.

“All season we’ve said it, we need to start getting points on the board now.”

Before they feature in the league again, Sunderland face Hull City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday, where the winners will be rewarded with another trip to Wembley - something that Brown would relish.

“That would be good,” he said. “I know it’s the semis but I’m sure a lot of the fans would travel again, they’ve had a great time at the weekend. It’s a great day out for them.”
