NEWCASTLE’S Matt Parr has been named in the Great Britain squad for this month’s European Figure Skating Championships in Budapest.

Parr, who is a multiple national champion, will make his Winter Olympics debut in the team competition in Sochi next month.

And like a number of his team-mates, the 23-year-old will warm up for the Games by appearing at the European Championships between January 13-19.

Parr will compete in the men’s individual event, with fellow Olympians Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland competing in the ice dance and Stacey Kemp and David King selected for the pairs. Northern Ireland’s Jenna McCorkell will be Britain’s representative in the women’s single.

Performance director Hilary Selby said: “We are delighted to name such a strong squad for the European Championships combining youth and experience.

“Taking place just a month before the Winter Olympics, the event will form a key part of training preparations for our Sochi skaters.”
