GUS POYET has given Craig Gardner a chance to make his mark in tonight's Capital One Cup quarter-final with Chelsea.
Gardner is one of three changes to the Sunderland team which drew 0-0 at West Ham on Saturday. He slots in to midfield at the expense of Ki Sung-Yueng.
There is also a recall for Adam Johnson on the wing ahead of Fabio Borini, while full-back Andrea Dossena has been given an opportunity at left-back ahead of Phil Bardsley.
Chelsea have made eight changes to the side which defeated Crystal Palace. Samuel Eto'o, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are among those to start for Jose Mourinho.
