LAURA WEIGHTMAN and Kate Avery have both been selected in the Great Britain squad for the European Under-23 Cross Country Championships in Belgrade this weekend.
With Charlotte Purdue, twice a European Cross Country Championships medallist at under-20 level, also involved, the British squad will harbour strong hopes of claiming a team medal.
Morpeth Harrier Weightman, who made the final of the 1,500m at last year’s Olympic Games, makes a rare foray from the track and boasts more major championship experience than the majority of her opponents in Serbia.
Shildon’s Avery is something of a cross-country expert, and goes into this weekend’s event on the back of a hugely impressive third-placed finish at last weekend’s NCAA Cross Country Championships in the United States.

AIMEE WILLMOTT heads to Holland this weekend to compete in the Dutch National Swimming Championships.
The Teessider will be competing for Middlesbrough Swimming Club at the invitational meet as part of her warm-up for the winter short-course season.
The championships should help hone her sharpness ahead of the following weekend’s European Short-Course Championships in Denmark.
Last year, Willmott claimed her first senior medal at the European Short Courses, a success that set her up for a successful long-course season this summer.
It is expected that the 20-year-old will compete in her favoured 400m individual medley in Denmark, along with the 200m butterfly and possibly one more event.
