Newcastle favourites for derby honours
2:45pm Friday 25th October 2013 in Sport
Gus Poyet didn't exactly make the ideal start to life as Sunderland manager, as his side crashed to a 4-0 reverse at Swansea last weekend.
The Uruguayan has an opportunity to endear himself to the Stadium of Light faithful as the Black Cats face Newcastle.
Despite home advantage, Sunderland kick-off as slight outsiders at 9/5 with bet365 while the Magpies are a 13/8 chance at Ladbrokes to heap more misery on the beleaguered Black Cats.
Although as it's a derby contest and there's little between the pair in the odds, BetVictor can expect plenty of support for the 12/5 against the stalemate.
Similarly, there could be support for a score draw at 10/3 (BetVictor), betway post 6/1 against a 1-1 scoreline and the pair are available at 10/11 and 4/5 respectively in Stan James's draw no bet market.
Fans of both sides might simply be content with avoiding defeat and Sunderland are 8/15 at bet365 to do that, with Skybet quoting Alan Pardew's charges at a slightly skinnier 4/9 in the same market.
Nevertheless, it's mid-table United that come into the contest in better shape and in a match that's 5/6 courtesy of Stan James to produce three or more goals, they might be well backed at 10/1 (BetVictor) to finish on the right side of a 2-1 scoreline.
Alternatively, any Magpies triumph by one is a 3/1 shot at Winner.com and on the side of the coin.
Stan James rate a 2-1 Sunderland success at 10/1 or bet365 offer 7/2 about Poyet's troops shading it by a one-goal margin.
Ladbrokes at least believe the sets of supporters will both have a goal to cheer, marking 3/4 against each team finding the net. At 10/11 via Paddy Power, Newcastle are fancied to get on the scoresheet first (11/10, bet365).
Stan James price the Magpies' top scorer Loic Remy at 11/2 to break the deadlock on Wearside, where an opener from the Black Cats' fit-again Steven Fletcher is a 7/1 shot at William Hill.
Pardew's men are 5/2 with Skybet to keep a clean sheet, Winner.com quote Sunderland at 11/4 to do likewise at the other end and in what's likely to be a tight affair, bet365 make the match 2/1 to be goalless at the break.
Hartlepool's turnaround has been dramatic, Colin Cooper's men having ended a six-match winless streak to register five victories and a draw in seven outings and given their form Pools will fancy their chances of gleaning something at Scunthorpe.
Nevertheless, the Iron are BetVictor's 11/8 favourites while Pools are a 9/4 chance at bet365 and it's 12/5 via Skybet to finish all square, a price that might prove popular in light of Pools three stalemates in six on their travels.
BetVictor go 13/2 about a 1-1 scoreline at Glanford Park, where it's 4/1 courtesy of Ladbrokes to be level after both 45 and 90 minutes and in the handicaps, William Hill give Cooper's troops a goal start at odds of 8/13.
More optimistic can opt for a 2-1 Pools victory (11/1, Stan James), BetVictor make the visitors 19/5 to prevail by one and in attack, in-form Luke James is 15/2 at bet365 to continue his fine run by opening the scoring.
