Golf shorts: Grey ends year on a title winning high
DARLINGTON golfer Darren Grey has finished the year in style by winning the English & Welsh One-Armed Open Championship.
Grey, who memorably hit a hole-in-one at the World Championship in June, emerged from 27 holes ahead of the rest in dreadful conditions at Tynemouth Golf Club.
He won the nett title by three shots from Robert Paul, who claimed the gross crown.
Grey said: "I had an off day over the first 18 holes but I pretty much expected that because of the weather. It was hammering down all weekend, so I should be satisfied with how well I played really."
After winning the title he won in 2011 with a 13 over par total, Grey plans to have a break up until Christmas. With a baby due in January he is not firming up plans for a return to the tee box just yet.
SOUTH SHIELDS' Martin McCririck has won the Durham County Union Order of Merit.
McCririck secured enough points in the Leonard Crawley Medal to secure top spot, with his 1,020 points tally earning him 20pts ahead of Rickie Lee.
Top ten standings in the Order of Merit: McCririck (South Shields) 1020pts; Lee (Tyneside) 1000; J Kennedy (Consett) 620; A Wilson (Darlington) 615; G Nesbit (Boldon) 580; R Thompson (Boldon) 500; D Patterson (Seaham 415; S Embleton (Ryton) 315; R Aisbitt (Brancepeth) 300; J Kirkpatrick (Ramside) 270.
FOUR North-East golfers have made it on to the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Players' Championship this weekend.
After months of qualifying from the northern section, Close House's Christian Brown, Tyneside's Kieran Wood, Caste Eden's Jack Trewhitt, Whitley Bay's Rosie Belsham and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea's Jai Scott will all compete with the rest of the country's qualifiers at Gainsborough this Saturday.
The Lee Westwood Golf Tour is in its first year and has touched 84 different venues so far, which has seen more than 250 golfers take part since April.
