Tennis: Number one seed Hewitt through to semi-finals in Sunderland
ASHLEY Hewitt lived up to his billing yesterday as he powered through to the semi-finals of the Aegon GB Pro-Series tournament at Sunderland Tennis Centre.
Bolton-based Hewitt, who is the number one seed, outclassed India’s Vijay Prashanth as he took just an hour-and-a-half to record a 6-4, 6-2 win.
He will meet the number four seed, Marcus Daniell, in today’s semi-final, with the New Zealander in fine form after winning a recent futures event in Ilkley.
Daniell was a 6-2, 6-2 victor over qualifier Tom Allen yesterday, and looks capable of causing Hewitt problems despite the gulf between the two players in the world rankings.
In the bottom half of the draw, number three seed Josh Goodall saw off Robert Carter 7-5, 6-2 to set up a last-four clash with South Africa’s Tucker Vorster, who beat Tom Farquharson 7-6, 6-3.
The doubles final will follow today’s singles semi-finals, and will be contested between the British duo of Goodall and Harry Meehan and the unseeded partnership of Prashanth and Dutchman David Pel.
Today’s action starts at 10.30am, and entry is free.
