Sunderland tight-lipped as Poyet appointment nears
SUNDERLAND are ready to appoint Gus Poyet as Paolo Di Canio's successor, according to sources close to the former top-flight midfielder.
The Black Cats are remaining tight-lipped over this morning's developments, with reports suggesting the Uruguayan's arrival will be confirmed inside 24 hours.
But Poyet, who revealed almost a fortnight ago that he was the front-runner for the job, is preparing to take on the role this week.
The former Brighton manager's odds to take over at the Stadium of Light tumbled over the weekend and then overnight bookmakers significantly shortened the odds once more to the extent of 1-66.
Poyet was always director of football Roberto De Fanti's first choice and chairman Ellis Short is ready to trust his judgement as the club needs someone suited to managing the players recruited by De Fanti.
Caretaker boss Kevin Ball lost both of his Premier League matches in charge to Liverpool and Manchester United, but there were more positive signs in the way Sunderland played.
Sunderland have now taken just one point from the 21 available at the start of the new season and Poyet's first game in charge looks like being the trip to Swansea on October 19.
