Mitchell storms in to lead at Rockliffe
KENT'S Peter Mitchell was the first man to tee off at the English Senior Open and delivered a sublime round of golf to claim the clubhouse lead at Rockliffe Hall.
Mitchell carded a flawless round of 66 to edge one shot ahead of Spaniard Jose Manuel Carriles, while Santiago Luna is still out on the course also sitting on five-under through 15 holes.
Mitchell, the former coach of Rockliffe's Graeme Storm, delivered six birdies to give himself every chance of Sunday success at the European Senior Tour showpiece.
Order of Merit leader Paul Wesselingh and former Ryder Cup player Mark James are both nicely placed on two under.
Rockliffe's Roger Roper somehow composed himself after a nightmare start to the day to card a three-over 75.
Roper suffered a two-stroke penalty when his caddy failed to turn up at the first tee on time this morning and ended up triple bogeying the opening hole.
