Routledge praises Swans

SWANSEA goalscorer Wayne Routledge believes Thursday night’s hard-fought Europa League win over St Gallen shows his side’s character.
Routledge got the only goal of the game six minutes into the second half, tapping in at the far post, as Swansea went clear at the top of the pool.
Swansea were a long way short of the form they showed in humbling Valencia at the Mestalla in their first group game, and the visitors would have taken something from the game had striker Goran Karanovic converted a firsthalf penalty.
‘‘No game is going to be easy and they battled hard, and in the end it was a gritty win,’’ Routledge said.
‘‘(The performance) shows that we have massive character but in the dressing room we know that we can knuckle down and play if we have to, but people know what we are about now.’’ Swans midfielder Leon Britton admitted Michael Laudrup’s side were less stylish than they have been in recent games, but the result is all that matters.
‘‘The first 25 mins it was a bit sloppy and with the penalty – maybe we could have had a penalty ourselves.
‘‘It wasn’t a great performance.
It as pretty gritty but it’s two from two.”
Laudrup did not underestimate the opposition but was pleased with his side’s ability to battle out a win.
‘‘I expected it,’’ Laudrup said of St Gallen’s performance.
‘‘When you play in Europe it’s like this. Some may think we are not playing a team as competitive as our Premier League teams but they are a good team and they played well.
‘‘In the first 15 mins they were the better side and got a penalty they missed and had another chance one-on-one then we came into the game and missed a couple of chances and in the second half both sides had chances.
‘‘They played well. I can’t say they surprised me as I have seen them play a few games.
‘‘I can’t remember when we last won a game when we didn’t play well so that’s good as well.’’
