After a bright start from the Black Cats under the caretaker management of Kevin Ball, Liverpool edged ahead in the 28th minute when Daniel Sturridge turned in a Steven Gerrard corner.
Then Suarez, making his first league outing since serving a ten-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic, arrived at the back post eight minutes before half-time to add a second from Sturridge's cross.
Sunderland made a fight of it second half when Emanuele Giaccherini pounced to finish a Ki Sung-Yueng shot which was spilled by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet six minutes after the restart.
But then, in the last minute, Liverpool counter-attacked at speed to wrap up the points when Sturridge and Suarez combined again to see the latter grab his second of the afternoon.
Sunderland still sit bottom of the Premier League, knowing not even a victory over Manchester United next Saturday will lift them out of the relegation zone.
