DURHAM have signed 22-year-old Ireland wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter to provide cover for Phil Mustard now that Michael Richardson is regarded purely as a batsman.
Because of an injury crisis at Edgbaston, Poynter played in Warwickshire’s last match of the season against Derbyshire.
He has also played for Middlesex during his time with the MCC Young Cricketers, for whom he scored 172 against Durham seconds at Brandon this season.
Although London-born, he has Irish ancestry and his uncle, Deryck Vincent, also kept wicket for Ireland. Poynter has played several games for Durham seconds and in his last appearance early this month he top-scored with 68 out of 202 away to Sussex and held five catches as the hosts amassed 405 for seven with Ashar Zaidi scoring 192.
Durham have also handed a contract to Graham Clark, a 20-year-old batsman from Whitehaven who made his academy debut in 2009 and has also been with the MCC Young Cricketers this year.
There has been no confirmation that Will Smith will be released, but Durham put out a statement this morning saying that left-arm bowler Jamie Harrison has extended his contract until the end of the 2015 season.
Durham’s match at Hove was in the balance at lunch on the final day of the season. With Keaton Jennings scoring 127 and Usman Arshad 83 they added 78 runs in 65 minutes before they were all out for 458, leaving Sussex to score 295 to win. On a pitch which has flattened throughout the four days they were 43 without loss at lunch.
