DURHAM have lost eight wickets in the afternoon session to be all out for 164, Jimmy Anyon taking five wickets and Chris Jordan four. It was not a case of slap-happy batting with the title in the bag, with only Graham Onions getting out carelessly – and he can be excused.
With plenty of life in the pitch, Sussex kept Jordan going for a long spell after lunch and the bounce he extracted earned him three wickets.
Scott Borthwick, playing back, was well caught low down at third slip by Ed Joyce for 36 and Ben Stokes seemed to have got on top of a cut, only to be picked up by his bootstraps by Luke Wells at backward point.
Will Smith made 32 before steering a ball from shoulder height to first slip, where Matt Prior juggled it before diving to hang on.
Michael Richardson and Usman Arshad were undone by Anyon’s sharp inward movement, both recording ducks.
Onions made 13 before skying an attempted pull to be caught at mid-off and Paul Collingwood was last out for 25, caught at deep mid-wicket.
