Pools slight favourites for a first home league win
4:30pm Friday 6th September 2013 in Sport
The goalless encounter at Torquay means Hartlepool are still without a League Two victory and in the bottom two after five matches, but bookies make Colin Cooper's men tentative favourites as they entertain Wycombe.
BetVictor rate Pools at 29/20 to secure a much-needed maximum haul at the expense of the mid-table Chairboys, Stan James's 2/1 outsiders and it's 12/5 courtesy of bet365 to finish all square.
The latter may prove popular following last weekend's result and punters might be tempted to tackle either Skybet's 10/1 posted against another scoreless encounter or Stan James's 4/1 for the teams to be inseparable when each half comes to a close.
Having seen their team lose both league fixtures at Victoria Park, home supporters may want to take out some insurance. For them BetVictor quote Pools at 7/10 in the Draw No Bet market and it's 2/5 with bet365 for Cooper's charges to avoid defeat.
Incredibly, Pools have yet to find the net in the league this season, which will inevitably deter some fans from backing them and indeed their lack of goals lends appeal to a match tally of fewer than 2.5, priced by betway at 3/4.
Bolder punters can opt for William Hill's 9/4 about the teams coming up with no more than a single goal between them and pessimists can head to Winner.com, where Hartlepool are chalked up at 11/4 to again fail to get on the scoresheet.
However, Pools found their scoring touch in emphatic fashion in the Johnstone's Paints Trophy in midweek, smashing five past League One Bradford and that's set to lift optimism levels amongst the home contingent, who can back their team at 7/1 (Stan James) to register a 1-0 success.
Those expecting both teams to net (5/6, BetVictor) may prefer a 2-1 triumph for Cooper's troops at 17/2 via bet365 and Ladbrokes cover both results, marking 13/4 against a home success by a one-goal margin.
Paddy Power rate Pools at 11/4 to be in front after 45 and 90 minutes and Stan James consider them 9/10 favourites to defy their recent struggles in attack by breaking the deadlock.
That opening goal is 13/2 with BetVictor to be struck by Steve Howard, who missed Tuesday's clash with an eye wound while the man that put Pools 1-0 up against the Bantams, Luke James is a 7/1 shot at Skybet to repeat the feat against Wycombe.
Having taken just one point from their opening three Premier League fixtures, Sunderland have been cut to 5/2 by Stan James in the relegation betting and similarly, Newcastle's failure to make any additions to the squad on transfer deadline day has seen them trimmed to 5/1 (BetVictor) for the drop.
The managers of the two clubs also head the market for the top flight boss that departs his post first - or the sack race - as some call it.
Fiery Black Cats gaffer Paulo Di Canio leads the way at 3/1 with Ladbrokes and Stan James quote Magpies chief Alan Pardew at a slightly heftier 11/2.
