121 to win
PAUL Collingwood’s perseverance with Scott Borthwick finally paid dividends as Yorkshire were dismissed for 419, leaving Durham to score 121 to win in the final session in 37 overs.
When Liam Plunkett took 12 off a Borthwick over towards the end of an eighth-wicket stand of 53 in 19 overs with Ryan Sidebottom the leg-spinner had figures of none for 134.
They were a grossly unfair reflection of his bowling and he then took the last three wickets without conceding a run.
Durham were again aghast when Martin Bodenham turned down an lbw appeal by Ben Stokes with Sidebottom on nought.
He was eventually caught off bat and pad to end the stand and it was not so much his nine runs which held up Durham as the length of time he stayed in.
Four overs later Plunkett edged to Ben Stokes at second slip to depart for 42, having partly atoned for his only disappointments in his first season with Yorkshire coming in his performances against Durham.
Borthwick wrapped it up shortly before the scheduled tea interval by having last man Jack Brooks caught at slip by Collingwood.
Yorkshire had resisted longer than looked likely when Adil Rashid drove carelessly at the first ball after lunch and fell to a brilliant diving catch by Keaton Jennings at mid-wicket off Chris Rushworth.
Then Stokes had Gary Ballance caught behind for 26 and at 357 for seven Yorkshire led by only 58. They looked well on the way to achieving victory until Borthwick has his rewards.
