DURHAM were frustrated by bad light then drizzle after two wickets in two balls in Usman Arshad’s second over had continued their rapid progress.
Surrey were 33 for three after following on 313 behind, but with Hashim Amla showing his class they had advanced to 52 for three by the time the umpires decided the light was too poor.
As when no play was deemed possible on the second evening, it was again a decision with which most people in the ground would not have agreed. However, light rain soon set in and persisted throughout the afternoon.
Amla hit two fours in Arshad’s first over, but the first ball of his second induced an edged drive from left-hander Rory Burns, which was caught by Scott Borthwick at second slip. Then Vikram Solanki gloved a leg-side catch to Phil Mustard.
Amla was on 32 at the break with Zander de Bruyn on two.
