Football Insider: Boro old boy reunited with Geordie striker
8:00am Wednesday 14th August 2013 in Sport
FORMER Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing has completed his £5m move to West Ham.
The 29-year-old, who had two years remaining at Anfield on the deal he signed after leaving Aston Villa for £20m in 2011, now teams up again with old Liverpool team-mate Andy Carroll in east London.
Downing moved to Liverpool when Kenny Dalglish signed him from Villa, but has fallen victim to the club's determination to reduce the wage bill following another season without Champions League football.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has been active on the transfer front this summer and it has been his desire to bring in younger players with potential on less money than many of those he has been looking to move on.
SAMUEL Eto’o has highlighted his desire to move to Chelsea in the hope it will help him to be reunited with former manager, Jose Mourinho.
The pair worked together at Inter Milan and Mourinho is weighing up whether to place a bid for the Cameroon international, as he is available at current club Anzhi Makhachkala.
ANDRE Villas-Boas has attempted to quell speculation about the potential departure of strikers Jermain Defoe and Gylfi Sigurdsson, by ruling out any possibility of selling them.
Defoe has been linked with a handful of clubs, including West Brom and Queens Park Rangers where Scott Parker is close to moving in a £2m deal. Sigurdsson has been out of favour for much of last season.
Nevertheless, Tottenham boss Villas-Boas has specified his desire to keep the players and insists there are no plans concerning their transfer.
NEMANJA Vidic is yet to have reached a deal to extend his contract at Manchester United, but stresses that he is not concerned about the situation.
The 31-year-old has not discussed his future after the conclusion of last season. However, a number of injury drawbacks have meant he needs to prove his fitness prior to any agreement with the Red Devils to remain at Old Trafford.
WATFORD striker Troy Deeney has been linked with a trio of Premier League teams, with Tottenham, Fulham and West Ham all declaring their interest in signing the in form player.
The 25-year-old has displayed his talent with 20 goals last season, and Watford manager Gianfrano Zola has admitted his concern at many clubs taking an interest in Deeney.
