Frustration for Onions
A BROKEN finger has brought further frustration for Durham’s Graham Onions following his omission from the England team for the fourth Test.
After suffering the injury in Sunday’s win against Scotland in Glasgow, Onions has been ruled out of this week’s two remaining YB 40 fixtures.
This evening’s floodlit match against Essex at Chelmsford could also be Ben Stokes’ last Durham appearance for a while.
He is not expected to be available at Derby on Thursday night after being named in the England Lions team to play Australia at Northampton on Friday and Saturday.
Stokes will also be with the Lions for three one-day games against Bangladesh next week and will miss the championship match at home to Surrey starting on Thursday week.
If, as expected, he is named in England’s Twenty20 squad for two games against Australia at the end of the month he will also be ruled out of the championship clash with Yorkshire at Scarborough.
Onions broke the little finger on his right hand in trying to hold a return catch. He hopes to play in the Surrey match, when his presence is likely to be crucial to Durham’s chances of maintaining their title challenge.
Either Mark Wood or Jamie Harrison will step in tonight, or possibly both if Durham decide to field an extra seamer at the expense of Ryan Pringle.
Having to travel to Chelmsford so soon after the trip to Glasgow is far from ideal for Durham, especially for such an important match.
If they win to retain top spot in group B they will take a big stride towards the semifinals, but defeat would be a big setback.
Hampshire, who visit Glasgow today, are only 0.75 points behind Durham with a game in hand. They are at home to Surrey on Thursday and visit Lancashire next Tuesday.
Essex have a strong one-day line-up featuring New Zealand Test batsman Hamish Rutherford, Ravi Bopara, Owais Shah and bighitting duo Ryan ten Doeschate and Graham Napier.
