Hartlepool United 0 Southend United 1
HARTLEPOOL UNITED fell to an all-too-familiar Victoria Park defeat – losing to ten-man Southend United.
The visitors were a man short for the entire second half after striker Barry Corr was dismissed, but Pools – for all their dominance – were unable to break them down.
Pools were one-down on seven minutes. Darren Holden mis-hit his clearance and winger Will Atkinson latched onto the ball and crossed low for Freddy Eastwood to knock in.
From then on it was all Pools, but they couldn’t find a way through.
James Poole was twice denied by keeper Mark Bentley, Jon Franks shot wide and Luke James had a header sail wide.
Corr was sent-off a minute after a melee involving the majority of players on the pitch saw only Neil Austin yellow carded.
The striker saw red as he tangled with Jack Baldwin when the Pools defender was allowing the ball to bounce out of play.
It was a harsh decision, and one decided by the assistant referee.
But, even up against reduced numbers, Pools couldn’t find a way through.
Jon Franks chipped across goal, Bradley Walker shot wide, likewise Simon Walton and Phil Brown’s visitors saw the game out.
