Yorkshire will not be rushing when it comes to deciding on their overseas plans for the forthcoming county season.

The most likely signing at present is South Africa batsman David Miller for Twenty20, with both parties keen on a deal following the left-hander's successful spell with the county at home and abroad last summer.

It is no secret that Yorkshire would also welcome back Mitchell Starc if he was made available for any period of time by Cricket Australia, but first-team coach Jason Gillespie knows that is unlikely.

One name who Gillespie has distanced the county from is Australian bowler Shaun Tait, a Twenty20 specialist and a big mate of his.

A report this week suggested Yorkshire were frontrunners for his signature.

"We'll probably have some conversations about the overseas path in the next month or so," said Gillespie. "But we're not actually looking that far ahead at this stage.

"I can honestly say that I haven't spoken to Shaun about coming here. I'm really big mates with him and had him out at the MidWest Rhinos in Zimbabwe, but I haven't had a conversation with him about coming over to play for Yorkshire. In any conversation we've had, that hasn't come up.

"We're hopeful that Dave will be back because he had such a massive impact for us on and off the field last season. We really loved having him, and we'd love him back.

"We'd also love to have a player of Mitchell Starc's calibre if we could. The reality is that we haven't really thought about that, and the reason is that he's playing all three forms of the game for Australia.

"There's a lot of cricket coming up for them, so we don't expect him to be available at all. Having said that, we'd certainly look at it if he was.

"We've recruited really well already this winter. I believe along with Andrew Hodd from Sussex, who is an excellent signing, we have two fantastic lads and fantastic bowlers in Liam Plunkett and Jack Brooks.

"When you look at it like that, do we really need to go down the overseas bowler route? You probably think we don't need one."

One batsman who has not been ruled out of the reckoning is former Australia star Ricky Ponting: "Don't worry, his name came up after he made the decision to retire," said Gillespie.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire's squad returned to pre-season training at Headingley this week.

After concentrating on fitness work before the festive period, cricket skills have now been introduced to their programme.

"The boys did plenty of fitness work before Christmas, but now we're back with batting, bowling and fielding," added Gillespie. "Everyone's enjoyed their time off, but it's exciting to be back amongst it preparing for the season ahead."

While Liam Plunkett is heading to Adelaide next week, rookie wicketkeeper Dan Hodgson, 22, has returned to Zimbabwe to complete his winter of domestic cricket with the Mountaineers team. Gary Ballance will head to Australia with the England Lions in February.
