AN elderly man had to be rescued after falling down a 30ft embankment in the North Yorkshire Dales.

The man fell down the almost-vertical rockface at Mill Gill near Askrigg, Swaledale, at about 3.15pm this afternoon.

According to a police spokesman, he clung to a tree for more than an hour before he was reached by teams from Swaledale Mountain Rescue and the Great North Air Ambulance.

He was hauled to the top of the embankment where he was examined by paramedics, but did not appear to have sustained any serious injuries.

He is expected to be airlifted to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
