Indie band ready to set the world on fire
NORTH-EAST indie band We Start Fires have announced they will tour Japan with Mercury Prize winners the Klaxons in December.
The Darlington punk-pop four-piece are hoping to set the Japanese charts alight. They will play four dates with the Klaxons, who beat the Artic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse to collect a £20,000 prize for their album, Myths of the Near Future.
The Klaxons' hits include Golden Skans and a cover of dance track It's Not Over Yet.
They are credited with pioneering "new rave" genre.
We Start Fires have been asked to join the Klaxons on tour to coincide with release of their debut self-titled album in Japan.
The band will support the group in two gigs in Toyko, one in Osaka and one in Nagoya, starting on December 10.
The group have played in Italy, Amsterdam and Texas. However, it will be the first time any band member has travelled to Japan and also their first Asian gig.
Nikki Vaughn, who plays bass guitar, said the news still hadn't sunk in.
"I can't really believe it," she said.
"It is like a double whammy - we get to go to Japan and tour with the Klaxons.
"I can't think of a better band to be touring with at the moment.
"They are at the forefront of everything right now. We're all very excited."
Although it will be their first time in Japan, it will not be the first time We Start Fires have played with the Klaxons.
"We played with them before they broke out - we did one date with them on the Longcut tour and they supported us.
"We didn't really get a chance to meet them then, so it will be good to spend a few days with them."
The tour will finish a busy year for the Darlington group.
They have released their first album, embarked on a debut national tour, performed live on Radio 2 and been acclaimed in the NME magazine. Before they jet off to Japan, We Start Fires will play 11 dates that have been added to their UK-wide tour, including a gig at SeOne, in London, where they will support The Rakes.
They will also play at Escobar, in Hartlepool, on November 23, Spensley's Emporium, in Middlesbrough, on November 30 and Stockton's Georgian Theatre on December 21.
