The Teenagers – Newcastle Carling Academy 12.05.08 The Teenagers consists of three grubby Parisian hipsters with a fondness for infectious electro-pop and filthy lyrical fantasies. Expanded to a five piece through extra guitar and live drums, they certainly pull off am excellent performance.
Launching into 'Starlett Johansson' with slightly smug smiles curling their lips, the crowd recognise this ode to the movie star and they join in the dancing, at this point the dance floor is overflowing. The Teenagers are most well known for the song "Homecoming", as always their signature move is to pull a few random girls up on the stage to sing the female vocals, this didn't go as well as planned, so the backing track did most of the singing. All the same they powered through their set list, dancing every young girl in the room into a frenzy. Vocalist Quentin Delafon wrapped his mic around one hand with the other arm outstretched bouncing up and down like a mad man. He often leans back and forth into the crowd, beckoning the crowd to touch him, like some gorgeous superstar. More still, the room continues to swirl around the fuzzy mess of 80s pop and electro.
The Teenagers show that they aren't to be taken seriously and people who do are missing the point. They're no longer teenagers themselves but the personas of the songs are and as they say themselves "We're playing the songs and you're dancing along, feeling better".
