Friendly Fires – Newcastle Carling Academy 11.05.08 It is something of a pleasure to witness just how much progress Friendly Fires have made in the space of a year. Now making an appearance on the NME Topman New Noise Tour; their material is somewhat memorable, and they can certainly pull off a more than a decent performance. Live and up close in personal the band are far superior to their recordings, and that's not just because they dance like crazy and shake maracas about. If accessible anthemic pop is your musical tipple of choice, then this lot are sure to please no doubt. Yet, no matter how much the band stress their love of dance, the one thing clearly evident tonight is that Friendly Fires are, for better or for worse, a pop band through and through.
Throughout the tracks, the crowd were not stop movers, and seemed that they were enjoying every second of the bands appearance. Classics such as On Board,' Photobooth' and Your Love' bore holes in the dancing shoes of the fans and within moments of playing the unforgettable "Paris" the electro beats and blasts had put the majority of the crowd in an ultimate trance.
After their 40 minute spectacle, the St Alban's three piece vanished with their cowbells and left the crowd feeling euphoric, ecstatic and exhausted.
