Pendulum – Newcastle Carling Academy 04.05.08 Originally from down under Pendulum are the creators of never-ending drum and bass tunes that will instantly blow your mind.
As soon as the lights began and the beats started, it was a mad dash for a spot, to commence with the movement. Pendulum's sound is typically heavy beats accompanied by low, buzzing baselines, overlaid with synthesized leads, and for me that was a perfect fit with the crowd. Who all looked like the equivalent of a Red Nose with added UV paint. When "Blood Sugar" kicked in, it was enough to see people literally bouncing off the walls of the academy. It was great to watch the crowd split further in two - from those eager to be swept on the journey, to those who simply did not know what had hit them. These guys are definitely mix-tape geniuses, and no words by the band were necessary, everyone was too busy dancing like crazy. One of the most captivating things about Pendulum's sound is that is swings effortlessly between the poles of rock and electronica. Bolstering a more typical band setup with a DJ and live production trickery, the formula here remains simple and effective: start with a high-energy riff, and build. And build. And build.
Pendulum describe their sound as "A Wall of Sound", they really couldn't have put it any better because I could have built a house from it. Pendulum have arrived and I'm pretty sure their feet are planted firmly on the ground.
