Youth Movies – Newcastle Carling Academy 09.03.08 Youth movies seem as though they've been around for a while. The English rock quintet formed back in the distant past of 2003 and it's taken them a while to fully release their true sound. However they're clever, original and unpredictable. The band have developed a reputation as a compelling live act, touring regularly as well as playing improvisations, collaborations and live film soundtracks in art galleries, theatres and forests.
They approach a song from three different directions; allowing themselves to add a few jazz improvisations here and there. The trumpet is an excellent addition, as it pierces through the guitars like a solitary figure on a sea of noise.
Youth Movies have a lot stage presence which releases energy and spark into the crowd, and everyone's dancing by the third song. However the best part of their set is yet to unfold; they fly into an amazing psychedelic melody leaving the entire crowd mesmerized. You can really see how the band fit together; they share a real pleasure in playing and also they all have a sharp understanding of each others improvisations and desires.
They're a brilliant band live, and if you go and see them I can promise you won't be disappointed.
